WHAT ARE ANTIOXIDANTS
Antioxidants are a diverse group of molecules that slow down and prevent the oxidation of chemicals within the body. The oxidation process can be quite damaging to the human body as it can involve the production of free radicals, which can form dangerous chain reactions results.
Low levels of antioxidant molecules or antioxidant enzymes causes oxidative stress and may damage or kill cells, increasing the perceptibility of early aging, and chronic diseases such as cancer and coronary heart disease. High levels of Antioxidants can scavenge and terminate these chain reactions by removing free radicals that are primarily present in stress, alcohol, smoke and polluted environments.
Humans, unlike the plant and animal kingdom, do not possess complex systems of antioxidants, such as vitamin C, vitamin E, glutathione, and enzymes like catalase, various peroxidases and superoxide dismutase. Antioxidants are widely used as supplements to help maintain good health and possibly prevent disease.
HISTORY OF ANTIOXIDANTS
The term antioxidant means "antioxygen". Studies were carried out in the late 19th and early 20th century to discover the uses of antioxidants for the industrial industry for the prevention of metal corrosion, the vulcanization of rubber, and the polymerization of fuels.
During their research into how vitamin E prevented lipid oxidation led to the identification that antioxidants prevent oxidative reactions by scavenging reactive oxygen species before they can damage cells. This discovery of vitamins A, C, and E as antioxidants led to the realization of the importance of antioxidants for living organisms.
